Miscarriage, Pregnancy, and Infant Loss Support in Calgary

For anyone who has been through miscarriage, pregnancy or infant loss, you know that this is one of the most challenging things you have ever had to navigate.

This unique experience of grief can be so jarring and crippling.

Our grief process can be extremely confusing in the face of such a loss, and even though we know that grief might look different for everyone, this particular type of grief can also feel so profoundly lonely and isolating. It can lead to difficulties connecting with our partners, family members and friends.

In the face of such a loss, we can experience a range of emotions, many simultaneously including regret, anxiety, deep sorrow, depression, anger, jealousy, envy, and even numbness. Often our feelings of grief can feel unbearable and it can be an extremely difficult path to navigate. The grief we experience can be wave like, coming and going, and some days the pain can be unbearable, taking our breath away and we can feel as though we are "starting over again".

We also might feel like we are different people than before the loss of our pregnancy or infant, and we can feel completely disconnected from our purpose and sense of self.

Moreover, this type of loss is also very layered and comes with many secondary losses. Secondary losses are the additional emotional, psychological, and social impacts that stem from our loss. This can include secondary losses such as:

  • The loss of future hopes and dreams

  • Loss of our mental and physical well-being

  • Loss of our friendships and relationships

  • Feelings of isolation

  • Loss or shifts in our identity

  • Accompanying fear and anxiety

  • Loss of purpose

  • Loss of the joy and once care-free nature associated with pregnancy

Sometimes our grief also has elements of it that can be quite traumatic; for example, for those who have experienced miscarriage, pregnancy loss, or infant loss, the unique details and events connected to your individual loss may feel very traumatizing.

In either case, please know that there is NO right or wrong way to grieve the loss of your pregnancy or infant. Everyone works through grief in different ways and at different paces.

No matter what your journey with grief has been, please know that you are not alone, and we are here to support you.

If you are experiencing grief or feeling lost after a miscarriage, pregnancy loss or infant loss, working with a trained therapist who understands this loss can support you in feeling less alone and lost as you navigate this extremely difficult journey.
